ThornHill Woods
is located in the ThornHill Vaughan area which is one of Toronto’s
oldest and most vibrant but fastest growing suburbs.
The area is named for Benjamin Thorne, a businessman who moved to the area
in 1820 and set up a number of businesses including a sawmill, a grist mill
and a tannery. The area was originally called Thorne’s Mills or Thorne Hill,
a name that was eventually changed to ThornHill.
Interestingly enough the village of ThornHill claims to date from
1794 when the earliest settlers arrived in the area. The first municipality
of ThornHill, a police village was created in 1931. In 1971 the
police village was abolished and administration was transferred to the towns
of Vaughn and Markham.
ThornHill Woods or Block 10 is located in the Carrville District in
Vaughan. It was historically considered part of the nearby village of Maple.
ThornHill Woods became part of Vaughan in 1971 when the Township of
Vaughan was converted into a town. Vaughan has become a city so ThornHill
Woods is now part of the city of Vaughan.
ThornHill Woods is bounded by bordered by Highway Seven, Bathurst
Street, Dufferin Road and Major McKenzie Drive. The area is popular with
young families who have recently moved out of apartments in Toronto and into
their first homes. The types of Housing in ThornHill Woods are a mix
of single family homes and town homes. So far there are no apartment houses
in ThornHill Woods but there are plans to construct them.
ThornHill Woods is one of the fastest growing communities in Canada.
It is hard to determine how many people live in ThornHill Woods
because it wasn’t included in the last Canadian census. Estimates of the
area’s population range from 16,000 to 20,000. Even though ThornHill
Woods statistics aren’t available it should be noted that the city of
Vaughan has doubled in population since
1991.
